Planning a visit to the Jackson or Yellowstone area? Take a few minutes to look over some of the most common questions we get regarding visiting this beautiful western wilderness. Of course if you have other questions, do not hesitate to contact us, we are more than happy to assist you!
Where is the ranch located?
An isolated retreat deep in the Gros Ventre River Valley, Goosewing marks the entry point to a protected, pristine wilderness. We are located 40 miles northeast of Jackson, Wyoming in the Bridger-Teton National Forest, bordering the Gros Ventre Wilderness. Our remote location allows for excellent horseback riding, fantastic scenery and many opportunities to spot wildlife.
How far is the ranch from Jackson?
Goosewing Ranch is located about 40 miles northeast of the town of Jackson. You will need about 30 minutes for the first half, through beautiful Grand Teton National Park. The last 20 miles will take about 45 minutes, driving along a scenic dirt road through the Bridger Teton National Forest.
How far is the ranch from Yellowstone National Park?
Goosewing Ranch is about 90 miles from the south entrance of the Park. Allow at least 2 hours for driving through Grand Teton Park and wilderness and along the John D. Rockefeller Memorial Parkway to reach the South entrance of Yellowstone.
Which is the closest airport?
Jackson Hole airport (JAC) is 30 miles away. It is about a one hour drive from the ranch. The Jackson Hole Airport is connected to several major hubs in the US (Chicago, Denver, Salt Lake City, Dallas, etc.). Flying into Salt Lake City, UT and renting a car from there may prove a good choice. Salt Lake City is about 6 hours from Jackson. There are generally more daily flights available into Salt Lake than into Jackson. This is a fun alternative for those with extra days available before/after your ranch stay, which can include a visit to Yellowstone National Park and the Jackson Hole area.
Is there an airport shuttle?
Transfers are available from the town of Jackson or the Jackson Hole airport for $212 per party per round trip. You will be met in the baggage claim area; look for someone holding a Goosewing Ranch sign.
Do I need to rent a vehicle?
For guests that would like to visit other locations than Goosewing Ranch, a rental car provides freedom in scheduling these activities.
A four wheel drive vehicle is recommended early and late in the season.
Is there wildlife around the ranch?
Depending on the time of season, there are opportunities to spot elk, moose, mule deer, antelope, eagles, black bears, wolves, mountain lions, trumpeter swans, cranes and geese in the area.
What is the scenery like?
Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks are surrounded by huge National Forests that create a unique ecosystem.
Surrounding the high valley of Jackson Hole are 3 mountain ranges (Teton, Gros Ventre, and Wind River), all reaching more than 10,000 feet in elevation. Flowing through the valley are the Snake and Gros Ventre Rivers.
Where is the nearest hospital?
OTC medications are available at the ranch. All of our guides are CPR and First Aid certified. St. John’s Medical Center in Jackson is a well-known and great hospital. Idaho Falls and Salt Lake City both offer larger medical centers.
Do you accept credit cards?
Personal or travelers checks are preferred.
Visa, MasterCard and American Express are accepted with no surcharge when used to pay for the deposit. A 3% credit card fee will be added when used to pay for the balance.
Deposit & Final Payment
A 30% deposit is required to make a reservation.
The balance will be collected by the ranch 45 days prior to arrival.
Are gratuities and tax included?
Gratuities and tax are not included in the online rates; 22% is added into the bill when reserving your stay.
What is your cancellation policy?
Deposits are non-refundable when cancellation happens less than 60 days prior to arrival.
When cancellation occurs less than 45 days prior to arrival, then final payment becomes non-refundable too. A cancellation fee may apply to any reservation cancelled. Trip insurance is recommended and available at a fair price and is recommended.
What should I bring?
Layering is advised for comfort. Bring jeans, long sleeve shirts, jackets, hat, leather boots with a heel for riding, walking or hiking shoes, sunglasses and sunscreen. Don’t forget your swim suit and camera!
Is there cell phone reception at the ranch? Wireless Internet? TV?
There is no cell phone signal at or around the ranch. A land line is available for guests to use in the main lodge; we have phone cards available for sale. Complementary limited Wi-Fi internet is available in the main lodge and in the cabins.
A TV with satellite, DVD, pool table, and book shelves are located in the loft of the main lodge.
Do you allow pets?
For the safety of all guests and animals, the ranch only allows you to bring your pets only after approval. Pets are not allowed in any ranch building, including the cabins. Pets are not permitted on horseback trails or near the horses.
Is smoking allowed?
Smoking is allowed in outside areas only. Smoking is not permitted on or around the horses, on trails, or the tack room.

How many guests can the ranch accommodate?
The ranch can accommodate 35 guests, in eleven individual cabins.
What are the ranch accommodations?
There are eight authentic 1-room, 1-bath log cabins that offer casual western comfort, complete with full bath, fireplace and porch, and newly remodeled with lodge pole furniture (with different bedding arrangements for different family sizes). There are three 2-bedroom, 1-bath cabins for larger families, which have 1 queen bed in the parental bedroom, and 1 double bed and a set of bunk beds in the kids’ bedroom, in addition to a full bath and porch. All cabins are non-smoking. Smoking is permitted outdoors only.
May I arrive on any day of the week? What time is check-in and check-out?
Our packages include organized activities. In order to offer short stays, we ask our guests to arrive on certain days:
3 night packages start on Sunday or Thursday
4 night packages start on Sunday or Wednesday
5 night packages (4 nights on ranch one night in town) start on either Sunday or Tuesday
5 night packages with pack trip option start on Saturday or Tuesday
6 and 7 night packages start on Sunday
Check-in starts at 4pm; check-out is at 11am.
What types of activities do you offer?
Besides horseback riding and arena lessons, we also offer other planned activities throughout the day for both adults and children. They range from fly-fishing, target practice, skeet shooting, archery, arts & crafts, roping, wagon rides, hatchet and mountain man knife throwing, UTV exploring, team penning, and many more. We also have an in-ground heated swimming pool and outdoor hot tub and sauna that can be from 8am – 10pm daily. There are mountain bikes and helmets available for your use as well, and numerous hiking trails.
What is the riding program like?
The ranch offers rides every day (except Sunday) into the surrounding National Forest. Trail rides cater to all abilities, from the beginner to more advanced riders, and groups are kept small with 6 or less per wrangler. The ranch uses mostly quarter horses, and cantering or loping is allowed after approval from the wrangler. Children 6 and older can join the riding program. There is no riding on the day of arrival or departure, to give the horses a (well-deserved) day off! We recommend leather boots with a heel, and the weight limit is 270 lbs.
Does the ranch offer overnight pack trips?
A 2 day/1 night pack trip is included in the price of the 5 night pack trip package: This is a check in at Goosewing Ranch on either Saturday or Tuesday morning (about 9:30 am). You will begin your adventure by being fitted to your horse and saddle and given about an hour of riding instruction in the arena. Then you depart on your two day, one night pack trip. You will ride up Goosewing Canyon; spend one night at camp, high in the mountain, then a full day of riding through Tepee Creek. You will return to the ranch on the next afternoon for a relaxing evening and spend the next four nights on the ranch. Sorry, no children under 8 can participate on the pack trip. Pack trip packages run from June 13 until August 25. The 5 night pack trip packages either run Saturday – Thursday, or Tuesday – Sunday.
A three day/two night pack trip is included in our nine night package: Checking into Goosewing Ranch about 9:30 am on Friday morning. Being fitted to horse and saddle and given about an hour of riding instruction in the arena. Then you depart on a full day of riding up Goosewing Canyon, night at Tepee Creek camp high in the mountain, then a full day of riding following Bear cabin creek, 2nd night at Jagg Creek camp, last day of riding down Crystal Creek, returning to the ranch on Sunday afternoon. Then you will spend the next 7 nights on the ranch relaxing and enjoy all the resort ranch activities.
Pack Trips are only available in the five or nine night packages. The five night package is only available including a pack trip, or a night in Jackson. Pack trips are available from June 13 – August 25. Pack trips and the night in Jackson are sub-contracted.
Pack trips are only available with the 5 or 10 night packages.
Is there fishing available?
We have both spinner rod and fly rod equipment available for those guests who would like to participate in this activity. Fly fishing instruction is available for adults in our stocked trout pond with advanced notice.
If fishing away from the ranch, a fishing license is required and costs $14 per day (this permit can be purchased at the ranch).
Does the Ranch have ATVs or UTVs available?
You have free access to a Polaris Ranger (UTV) (2, 4 or 6 seats) during your stay. You only pay for the fuel you use. UTVs are for off ranch use only.
Is hiking available?
You are free to explore wilderness trails on your own. The ranch can provide pack lunches, maps and directions to trail heads. There are many trails to explore.
Does the ranch have mountain bikes?
Mountain bikes and helmets are available for guest use at no additional charge. Guests are also welcome to bring their own bikes to the ranch.
Does the ranch have a children’s program?
The children’s program is offered from mid-June through the end of August. The program runs for about 1 ½ to 2 hours daily and is best suited for children 6 years and older.
Activities include arts & crafts (dream catchers, horseshoe and river rock painting, and face painting…), lawn games, scavenger hunt, horse games and horse painting, hay rides, roping, archery, and target shooting, and kid rides with adventure activities. There is a new kids cabin/town. This is a place where kids rule and can use their imagination in a fun and safe environment. Includes Foosball table, pingpong, shuffle board and more!
We also have a tepee that can be reserved for a family night under the stars.
Children under the age of 6 will be the full responsibility of their parents. Baby-sitting may be available with advanced notice for an additional fee.
Does the ranch have a spa? Swimming pool & hot tub?
The ranch has an outdoor heated pool, an outdoor hot tub and a brand new sauna and message room. Our pool area has a deck with lounge chairs, perfect for sun tanning. Under the pergola, a shaded cocktail area overlooks the pond. Bring your swim suit and flip flops. Towels are provided, and robes are provided for adults. Spa treatments are available 2 days a week by appointment (A 60 minute massage is included in all packages for each adult) (Pool is open from June 15 – August 31 (earlier and longer if conditions permit), hot tub and sauna available may 31 – September 20)
Does the ranch have a playground?
Our Fort Goosewing playground area, complete with swings, slides, bridges, rock-wall, and shaded picnic area, will entertain little Davey Crocketts.
We also have a tepee that can be reserved for a family night under the stars. And a kids cabin with many fun games and an old west town setting.
What are the meals like?
All meals are served in the Main Lodge. Breakfast is complete with eggs cooked to order, bacon, sausage, French Toast, biscuits and gravy, daily specials and pancakes, in addition to a continental buffet with cereal, fruit and homemade pastries.
Lunches are usually trail side picnics.
Dinners are themed and there are two options each evening in addition to a kids menu, vegetarian option and gluten free option. – Prime Rib Night, Southwest Night, Cowboy Night (steaks), and Angler Night (trout and salmon). Depending on the cuisine, meals may be served plated or buffet style. Once a week, there is a “dutch oven” open fire cookout by the river with live entertainment! We are able to accommodate different dietary requests and restrictions with advanced notice.
Does the ranch serve alcohol?
The ranch has a liquor license and offers a cocktail hour daily. There is a $10 per bottle corkage fee for guests who would like to bring their own alcohol. We also accept special requests and can have the alcohol you desire on hand with advanced notice. We have beer, liqueur, and wine selections. One welcome drink is offered to guests 21 and over on their arrival day.
Alcohol is an additional cost. Must be at least 21 years of age to enjoy.
What types of evening entertainment are there?
At Goosewing we focus on relaxation! Each evening we provide new entertainment, such as a cowboy cookout, line dancing, lawn games, sunset UTV ride, or a campfire with s’mores.
A pool tournament, poker game, or a good book with a glass of wine also makes for a great evening.
Do you have a gift shop?
We have a full gift shop in the main lodge.
Does the ranch have guest laundry facilities?
We have a newly remodeled laundry facility, which exclusively serves our guests. Laundry facilities are available at no extra cost, and laundry detergent is sold at the ranch.
Is rafting available?
Rafting is available from June to September in Jackson Hole. Prices are about $65 – $85 per person. We can arrange for this activity with 2 days advance notice and provide transportation for an additional charge. Rafting trips are not included in packages. We do offer tubes so you can float the river near the ranch.
Is there a rodeo in Jackson?
There is a rodeo every Wednesday and Saturday night in Jackson, which runs from Memorial to Labor Day. Fees are about $12-40 per person. We can arrange for this activity with advanced notice. The rodeo is not included in your package.
Does the ranch offer sightseeing tours?
We can arrange trips to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. Prices vary according to the type and length of the tour. Not included in packages, but we can set up this activity for you with advanced notice.
What is there to do and see in the area?
The spectacular mountains of Grand Teton National Park and steamy geysers of Yellowstone are a short drive from the ranch.
The town of Jackson has interesting shops and museums as well as Wednesday and Saturday night rodeos from Memorial Day through Labor Day. There is also a Shootout on the Town Square (daily). Off ranch activities are not included in package prices.
What is the weather like?
Warm, dry days are the norm during summer time with evenings and nights often dropping to quite chilly temperatures.
Remember, we are located at 7400 feet, the sun is very intense, and sunscreen and a hat are essentials. Be sure to drink plenty of water.
